At NHS Herminie, students in Miss Julia’s classroom shared stories as to how NHS makes them successful. Each student wrote a sentence stating that they love NHS and the reason why they love it. Pictured below are students from Miss Julia’s classroom holding up their “I love NHS” sayings.

Matthew Matthew
Matthew Matthew, a young man from Smithton, was having trouble in public school. He had a hard time making friends and was often withdrawn. Matthew was struggling in school and he was frequently getting frustrated and acting out. He enrolled at the NHS School Herminie in order to address these issues and get support for his autism, where he excelled quickly. He learned to have self-confidence and became a very social student. He made many long lasting friendships and became a mentor to the younger students. His mother, Deborah, stated that her son demonstrated a complete turn around after attending NHS, from being very closed in to being open, outgoing, and social.

In 2013, Matthew became a strong self-advocate by requesting to visit his home high school at Yough School District. Weekly visits quickly turned into part-time placement for Matthew. He became a full time student at Yough School District for the 2013-2014 school year. Matthew loves being in high school. He has many new friends, enjoys many of the school activities, and even takes a college preparatory course. Matthew looks forward to graduating with his diploma at the end of the year and plans to attend college in the future.

Food Bank Volunteer DayStudents from the high school classroom volunteer for St Edwards Food Pantry the first Wednesday of every month. Food is obtained from the Westmoreland County Food Bank and supplied to identified individuals living in the local community who are in need.

Students help other volunteers unload food trucks, sort food into boxes, and distributed the food to those arriving at the food bank on distribution day.
